How to Maintain a Tankless Water Heater

Having a tankless water heater is a great joy. These water heaters are energy-efficient and cost-effective. They also ensure that you never run out of hot water as water is heated on demand. A well maintained tankless water heater can last up to 20 years without the need for a replacement.

Learning to maintain your tankless water heater will help you increase its lifespan. This will not only ensure that your water heater performs at optimum but also help you save money in the long term. The following are steps you should take to maintain your tankless water heater.

  1. Flush the system

A tankless water heating system should be flushed at least once a year. Flushing helps to remove minerals that have collected inside the system and prevent build up that can damage the heat exchanger. Mineral deposits can also cause the system to be less efficient, resulting in higher energy bills.

You will need about 2 to 3 gallons of distilled white vinegar. This is an effective and natural solution for descaling your system. Pour the vinegar in a 5-gallon bucket. Turn off the water heater. Connect a hose to the inlet of the hot water heater and a submersible pump to the other end of the hose. Submerge the hose in the bucket containing the vinegar. Attach another hose to the outlet of the hot water heater and submerge the other end in the bucket to create a close loop system.

Run the sump pump for about an hour. The vinegar will clean the system and remove any mineral deposits. Replace the vinegar with water to clean out the vinegar from the system. Reattach the hoses and reconnect your unit.

2. Clean the water filter

Many tankless water heaters have a screen (filter) that prevents sediment and debris from entering the system. Accumulation of sediment and debris on the water filter over time can result in failure of your water heater.

Cut off the water supply to the water heater and remove the filter. You can refer to the product manual for specific directions on how to remove the water filter of your unit. Remove debris and sediment on the filter and around it. Use warm soapy water to wipe down the filter and replace it. Reconnect your water supply.

3. Clean the air filter

Many tankless water heaters also have an air filter. Just like the water filter, this part also needs to be cleaned regularly to ensure optimal functioning of the water heater.

Locate the air filter. Remove it and use a soft brush to clean it. You can also use warm soapy water. Ensure that you clean it thoroughly for proper airflow. Rinse the filter and allow it to dry before replacing it in the water heater.

Routine maintenance of your tankless water heater will help to ensure that it is working optimally for longer. Use the steps above to maintain your system and increase its lifespan.
